Gallery: Catalog 32

Dear Friends,

Editorial choices cartographers make can have great impact: for instance, based on his estimate of Amerigo Vespucci's explorations, Martin Waldseemuller decided to use the name America on his 1507 wall map (the only known example is in the library of Congress). Within a few years Waldseemuller concluded he'd given too much weight to Vespucci's claims and tried to make amends. His 1513 map removes America as a toponym in favor of the generic "Terre Nove" (New Land). Further, a caption credits Columbus with discovering this new region for the Kingdom of Castile. Too late! The name stuck, and the 1507 map has even been dubbed America's birth certificate.

Bearing all this in mind, we are pleased to offer a fine example of the 1513 "corrected" map of the New World (#19) and well as Laurent Fries' 1525 version with an image of Columbus' landfall verso (#20). For other maps relating to the era of European discovery, see items #21 - 24.

Further highlights in this catalog include a composite atlas by Ottens (#1), a circa 1696 proof state world map by Robyn (#12), plates from Adams' & Pine's scenes of Britain's victory over the Spanish armada (#3 - 4), and Elizabeth Visscher's uncommon plan of the siege of Belgrade (#55). More American material of note: the two northern sheets from the Amsterdam edition of Popple's map (#36), Benzoni's handsome map of the southeast and the Caribbean (#41), and Ensign & Thayer's 1851 wall map of the United States (#28). Another wall map is a rare plan of Paris by Monbard, circa 1700 (#51).

Visitors are welcome by appointment.

Elizabethan Sea Dogs & the Spanish Armada

Engraved plates from John Pine's 1739 The Tapestry Hangings Of The House Of Lords... The tapestry set commemorated the defeat of the Armada in 1588 and was displayed in the House of Lords from around 1611 until its destruction (with the Houses of Parliament) in the fire of 1834. The maps are based on Robert Adams' 1588 charts. Writing in 1963 Schrire stated "the original Adams plates are extremely rare, and even the Pine reissues have now become scarce." Map Collectors' Circle Series No. 4., p. 8.

Sir William Hamilton's Vase Collection

Diplomat Sir William Hamilton (1730-1803) was posted to the Kingdom of Naples between 1764 and 1800. While there he developed an interest in vulcanology and indulged his taste for antiquities, forming major collections of bronzes, sculptures and Greek and Roman vases, many of which are now in the British Museum. Books describing and illustrating his collection were published in England, France and Italy. The following plates are from the 1801 Milan edition. Image sizes vary but all are printed on folio-size leaves. Engravings in black ink are superimposed over terra cotta backgrounds which were probably applied by stencil prior to the print run. VG to Fine.
