Gallery: Catalog 31

Dear Friends,

Among the great collectors of Americana, including maps, was Thomas Streeter - renowned for his scholarship as well as his discriminating taste. When his collection was sold at auction in 1966 - 69, the catalog ran to seven volumes plus an index. It remains an important and useful reference. We are pleased to offer the Streeter Copy of Thomas Pownall's Middle British Colonies which includes the original prospectus, Streeter's annotations, and correspondence relating to the map (item #3). This is a cornerstone map for the collector of American colonial material with a superb provenance.

Also of interest: Thompson's Alcedo with Arrowsmith's atlas of five American wall maps (item #4), an uncommon early Dutch edition of Lewis and Clark's map (#36), bound copies of the Turgot-Bretez plan of Paris (#1 and #2), Thomas Pennant's scarce map of Australia (#63), and a handsome group of celestial charts (#14 - 23).

If you are in the area, we invite you to visit our office. Hours are by appointment.

Maps from Crevecoeur

Michel Guillaume Jean de Crevecoeur (1735 -1813) served the French as a cartographer during the French and Indian War, but later resided in New York. His years there inspired his "Letters from an American Farmer" (1782), and later sojourns "Voyage dans le Haute Pensylvanie et...New York" (1801). The following three maps are from the latter work.
