Thomas, Cowperthwait & Co., New Universal Atlas. Phila., 1852. 14½ x 9 Chromolitho. SOLD
Text and vignette printed in full color by P.S. Duval, one of the leading practitioners of the art in America at that time. A romanticized view of Columbus' landing, with Europeans in vaguely 17th century costume. A painting by James Whistler (1803-1887) is credited as the source though this is an almost slavish copy of the steel-engraved version in Carey & Hart's 1844 atlas. In that version the artist is credited as Barralet.
