A charming frontispiece with the Muse of History and her aristocratic pupil. Father Time draws back a curtain revealing Death, Fortune and Eros dispensing their favors - good and ill - on the throng below. A cherub points to Europe on a globe. Engraver Bernard Picart (1673-1733) studied under his father Etienne "Le Romain" Picart and at the Paris Academy. In 1710 he moved to the Netherlands where he spent the rest of his life, illustrating Annals of the Dutch Republic and many other books.
