Mercator first used the motif of the mythological Titan Atlas holding up the Heavens for a book of maps; later designers sometimes show Atlas supporting the globe rather than the sky above. This figure props up the starry firmament with the sun and moon on either side. The rocky outcropping at his feet probably refers to the Atlas Mountains.
