Steel engraving by C. Wise after a painting by Frederick A. Chapman; from Vol. II of Colton's atlas. Four ladies in the Victorian concept of classical dress examine a globe amid emblems of art, science and navigation. Chapman (1818-91) was a noted painter of portraits, historical scenes and landscapes. Engraver Wise immigrated to America from England around 1850.
