[Cartoon; colonialism] Punch, The Rhodes Colossus / Striding From Cape Town to Cairo. London, Dec. 10, 1892. 9¼ x 7 BW. VG. Cartoonist Linley Sambourne's depiction of Cecil Rhodes festooned with telegraph wire and doffing his pith helmet astride the continent. Rhodes had agreed to complete the telegraph system at his own expense partly to achieve his goal of establishing a connected series of British possessions in Africa. His British South Africa Company morphed into Rhodesia, named for him in 1895. To modern eyes the image is one of overbearing colonialism. $125.00
