[Straits of Magellan] DeFer, Le Detroit De Magellen. Paris, 1700. 9 x 13½. Full Color. Tide marks entering printed areas, printer's smudge in title drape; ink ms page number in old hand upper margin. Overall Good condition. Reports Magellan's passage through the straits in October-November of 1520. Coordinates listed. Extensive soundings and two compasses rose aid navigators, and numerous captions identify locations for finding good water, wood, and edible plants. Also located: an oyster bed yielding pearls, and the home of "bonne taille gens" – literally, good-sized people. Reports of this sort by Europeans morphed into the famous Patagonian giant stories.
