[Strait of Hormuz] Van der Aa, La Rade de Gammeron... Leiden, 1727. 7½ x 6¼ on text leaf. Outline color. VG+. This old map helps us understand today's geo-politics. The Strait of Hormuz is in the news due to threats by Iran to close it. Each day about seventeen million barrels of oil (20% of the world supply) are shipped through this narrow strait between the Persian Gulf and the Arabian Sea. The map shows the city of Gammeron (now Bandar-Abbas) on the Persian (Iranian) shore, while to the south is Arabia (this part now is Oman). In the Strait are the large island of Kismis (Qeshm today) and several smaller islands, reducing the navigable width of the channel. Soundings show the deepest areas near the Arabian shore. $250.00
