[Sundial design] Anonymous, Ludimus Interea Nos Celeri Ludimur Hora. Italy?, 18th century. 22 x 31½ + uneven margins. Hand-colored. Some surface dirt, else VG. Manuscript design for a southerly vertical declining dial. The wall for which this dial was laid out deviated only slightly from true south. Pinholes in the document were used in constructing the dial; they defined the noon line and placement of the gnomon. City names in the center of the design use Italian spelling, but don't relate to any function of the dial. The only embellishment is the picture-frame border and the Agnus Dei (Lamb of God), a symbol of Christ also used by the Knights Templar. The punning Latin motto translates as "while we play, we are played by swift time." SOLD
