Arrowsmith & Lewis, A New And Elegant General Atlas. Boston, 1805. 4to. 63 uncolored maps (two folding). 2nd edition. Modern quarter cloth; new end papers. Upper right portion (about 2" x 5") of title page lacking; tp and "List of Maps" backed on Japan paper. Toning; some foxing and stains. SOLD
The geography is from English cartographer Aaron Arrowsmith and American Samuel Lewis (unrelated to Meriwether Lewis). The atlas contains 22 maps of American interest. Because the atlas was published before Lewis & Clark returned from their momentous journey, the four maps relating to the West (Louisiana, North America, British Possessions, and Spanish Dominions) present a snapshot of what was known at the time of their departure. Also noteworthy are early maps of Ohio and of Australia (New Holland). Phillips, Atlases 708; Wheat, Transmississippi West 259, 260, 261, 262.
