Apianus was a renowned mathematician whose Cosmographia dealing with astronomy, geography and cartography was reprinted many times for nearly a century after it first appeared in 1524 (Karrow 7/E reports thirty editions). The text here is revised by Mercator's teacher Gemma Frisius. The book is richly illustrated with many in-text diagrams, charts and maps including one showing the earth's climatic zones. The five working volvelles are in excellent condition save a small crease at a pointer tip on leaf C2v. C3v has the thread as called for (no moving paper parts). The volvelle at H2r is a polar projection world map (Shirley 51).
The folding cordiform world map is the rare block three (Shirley 131) found only in this edition of the book. One small wormhole (?) in the text above the map. North America is narrow with the east coast labeled Baccalearum; a distinct Yucatan peninsula is seen.
Bound with Christmann's book on the quadrature of the circle (squaring the circle) and Peckham's work on optics.
